  3. Yes, You Still Need to Wear a Face Mask to Your Podiatry Appointment

Here on the Sutherland Podiatry Centre blog, we do our best to steer clear of anything controversial or unpopular, but it must be said. This is a gentle reminder that, in accordance with current New South Wales public health guidelines, we still require our patients to wear face masks inside the practice. With thousands of new cases of several different strains of COVID-19 and influenza currently still being reported every day, it’s our responsibility as healthcare professionals to minimise risk for all our patients, many of whom are elderly or immunocompromised. The COVID-19 rules that are currently published on the NSW Government website state:

“Masks provide an extra layer of protection against COVID-19 and flu. Masks are still mandatory in some settings and are strongly recommended in crowded places. All people in NSW over the age of 12 are required to wear a face mask at a public hospital or private health facility (including private hospitals and day procedure centres)”.

As people who must wear masks for our entire workday, we understand that they can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. We also know that sometimes people forget, so we’re happy to offer you a disposable mask if you forget yours, or if you need a fresh one. We also offer seating just outside the door of the clinic, so that if you’d like to limit your time wearing a mask, you may wait outside (be sure to let a staff member know you’ve arrived first). Of course, we will honour any proven mask exemptions and not enforce the rule for children under 12 (although we do still recommend they wear one if possible). We’ll also gladly remove our masks to communicate with you if you’re deaf or hard of hearing.

It goes without saying that if you contract any contagious respiratory illness just before a scheduled podiatry appointment, we request you contact us as soon as possible to reschedule to a later date after you’ve recovered. Likewise, if your podiatrist happens to fall ill, we’ll call you and rebook your consultation so that you’re seen by a different podiatrist or at a different time. We’re grateful that when this has happened, so many of you have been so flexible and understanding during such a difficult time. We’re happy to answer any questions you might have about our COVID-19 protection policies, just call us on 9542 3491, email us at info@sutherlandpodiatry.com.au, or simply ask the receptionist in person.

Til next time

The Team From Sutherland Podiatry Centre
